Since 2008, the Global Center of Excellence (COE) at Kyoto University, Japan, has been engaged in a program called "Energy Science in the Age of Global Warming-Toward a CO2 Zero-Emission Energy System." Its aim is to establish an international education and research platform to foster educators, researchers, and policy makers who can develop technologies and propose policies for establishing a CO2 zero-emission society no longer dependent on fossil fuels. It is well known that the energy problem cannot simply be labeled a technological one, as it is also deeply involved with social and economic issues. The establishment of a "low-carbon energy science" as an interdisciplinary field integrating social sciences with natural sciences is necessary. The Global COE is setting out a zero-emission technology roadmap and is promoting socioeconomic studies of energy, studies of new technologies for renewable energies, and research for advanced nuclear energy. It has also established the Global COE Unit for Energy Science Education to support young researchers as they apply their skills and knowledge and a broad international perspective to respond to issues of energy and the environment in our societies. Comprising the proceedings of the Third International Symposium of the Global COE Program, this book follows on the earlier volumes Zero-Carbon Energy Kyoto 2009 and 2010, published in March 2010 and February 2011, respectively.

Today, the concept of net zero- energy buildings has become a major concern regarding fossil fuels combustion side effects, such as air pollution or global warming. NG (Natural Gas) is a kind of fossil fuels which is widely combusted in Iran to meet various buildings heating demand. However, this research is proposed mitigating NG flaring by substituting solar energy as an auxiliary energy source in dwelling buildings and estimating accurate values of SGI (Solar Global Irradiance) on tilted planes via Artificial Neural Network (ANN) respectively. To fulfill this objective a solar thermal collector is designed which is either responsible to preheat water circulates in radiators loop, to provide space heating, or domestic hot water to supply washing demand in flats. Indeed, in case of utilizing this application fewer NG will be combusted for rising input water temperature to required value and fewer CO2 emission eventually. Also a dwelling complex including 136 apartments is considered perform this research. This complex is situated in Mashhad, the second megacity in Iran. Besides, to evaluate this potential four steps have been taking into account.

Amorphous silicon is generally considered unsuitable for light emitting applications because of the indirect nature of its bandgap. Many efforts have been devoted towards the research of different systems compatible with a-Si technology and able to act as light emitters, among these are low-dimensional amorphous silicon structures. In these structures, it has been shown that, zero- phonon optical transitions are allowed and oscillator strength of the zero- phonon transition is significantly enhanced . Therefore, it is expected, the light emission properties will be improved. The aim of this study is to develop a photoluminescence a-SiQDs model, where its radiative recombination occurs at room temperature. This model is suggested, for the first time, both the effect of concepts, spatial and quantum confinements. This study may be able to show the differences between them. In fact, these concepts will be used to see the possibility for shifting the luminescence spectrum of a-SiQDs into visible region. The tuning the visible light by controlling the size of QDs also is taken into account.
